Sandra Callies

Sandra Callies (she/her) is a Lecturer in the School of Design at South Dakota State University (SDSU). With over 10 years of experience in architecture and design, her work focuses on human-centered projects in rural regions of Washington State and South Dakota, emphasizing contextual building design and respect for vernacular architecture. She advocates for historic preservation to sustain vibrant community environments.

Her teaching philosophy integrates arts like watercolor and writing to empower marginalized groups. Callies has volunteered at the South Dakota State Penitentiary and Mary's Place Shelter, using drawing to rebuild confidence among individuals recovering from addiction or incarceration. She believes art and design are transformative tools for social healing.
