Sandra Bowen Franz is an Associate Professor Emerita of Mathematics at the University of Cincinnati, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Applied Science. She holds a Master of Education (1982) from the University of Maryland, a Bachelor of Education (1976) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a Master of Arts in Teaching (2012) from the University of Cincinnati.
Her career spans over four decades, focusing on undergraduate mathematics education, curriculum development, and STEM pathways. She served as Director of the Math-Physics Learning Center (1991–2010), Coordinator of the Technical Access Program (1998–2006), and held leadership roles in Ohio’s mathematics associations for two-year colleges. Notable contributions include authoring multiple editions of the College Algebra Workbook and co-presenting at conferences like the AMATYC national meeting.
Dr. Franz has been recognized with the Distinguished Faculty Member award (CAS Tau Alpha Pi) and twice received the prestigious Faculty Who Make a Difference Award from the University of Cincinnati. Her service extends to national initiatives like the Dana Center’s STEM-Prep Pathway project and regional roles judging educational standards (e.g., PARCC Algebra II).
Her teaching spans courses from foundational quantitative reasoning to advanced trigonometry and STEM preparatory pathways. She has mentored new faculty and actively participated in hiring committees, curriculum reviews, and student competitions like the annual Math Bowl.
