Sana Nakata is an Associate Professor and Principal Research Fellow at the Indigenous Education and Research Centre, James Cook University. Her work focuses on the politics of childhood, Indigenous policy and governance, and democratic theory. She holds Australian Research Council grants and has authored/edited books like Childhood Citizenship, Governance and Policy (2015). Currently supervising six HDR candidates, she has successfully guided six PhD students to completion at the University of Melbourne. Her research bridges political theory with Indigenous rights, emphasizing decolonial practices and institutional reform.
Research interests include Indigenous-settler relations, child welfare policy, and legal frameworks affecting Aboriginal communities. Notable works address the 'infantilisation' of Indigenous Australians and the role of childhood in democratic systems. She actively contributes to policy debates on First Nations representation and climate justice through interdisciplinary collaborations.
