Dr. Samuel Thambar is a Physician Scientist and PhD candidate at Griffith University's School of Dentistry and Oral Health, with a focus on oral cancer early detection research. He holds an MD from Griffith University (2012) and completed a Research Masters of Head and Neck Surgery through the University of Sydney.
His research interests center on improving early detection of oral cancer through microbiome analysis (particularly Candida's role), biomarker discovery, and non-invasive screening methods using saliva samples. Driven by clinical experiences witnessing the devastating effects of late-stage oral cancer diagnosis, his work aims to develop better screening strategies for premalignant lesions. His research is supervised by Associate Professor Raj Nair, an established oral cancer researcher.
Dr. Thambar's work addresses a critical gap in oral cancer care, as current screening strategies for high-risk premalignant lesions are limited. His approach combines clinical medicine with cutting-edge molecular research to develop practical diagnostic tools that could significantly improve patient outcomes through earlier intervention.
As a physician-scientist in training, he exemplifies the integration of clinical practice and research to address real-world medical challenges, with a particular focus on making oral cancer detection more accessible and effective through non-invasive methods.
