Samuel Muller is a Professor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University, a position he has held since February 2025. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics and holds an Honorary Professorship at the University of Sydney until 2026. His leadership extends to research centers including the Data Horizons Research Centre, Astrophysics and Space Technologies Research Centre, and Frontier AI Research Centre.
His educational background includes a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Bern (2002) and a Diploma (MSc) in Statistics and Insurance Mathematics from the same institution (1998).
Professor Muller's research focuses on developing statistical models to improve population and planetary health. His work spans variable selection and feature extraction for complex data, statistical model building for accurate prediction, analysis of correlated and clustered data, classification methods for multiplatform data, regularization methods for high-dimensional data, and robust selection techniques for data with outliers or missing information. His applications extend to bioinformatics, microbiome studies, organ transplantation, and neuroscience.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on advanced statistical methodologies including generalized linear mixed models, feature screening for high-dimensional data, and dimension reduction techniques. These works consistently address challenges in modern data analysis across diverse scientific domains.

Professor Muller has supervised 11 Postdocs, 14 PhD students, 2 Masters of Research students, and 13 Honours students to completion, and currently mentors 3 Postdocs, 3 PhD students, and 2 Masters of Research students. His externally funded research includes Australian Research Council projects on reliable statistical solutions for complex data and NHMRC-funded work on arthritis outcomes and biologics usage optimization.
He leads multiple research initiatives through the Data Horizons Research Centre and collaborates extensively across disciplines, particularly in medical applications of statistical methodology.
