Samuel Martin serves as Visiting Assistant Professor of Vocal Studies and Director of Vocal Studies at The Hartt School, University of Hartford. An internationally active collaborative pianist, he performs across recital, chamber, choral, orchestral, opera, and musical theater genres with recent engagements in Germany, México, and throughout the United States. He is the Founding Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Song Initiative (CSI), an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to promoting innovation in song repertoire and audience accessibility.
His educational background includes:
- Master of Music in Collaborative Piano from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music
- Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Ithaca College
Martin's artistic research focuses on expanding the art song canon through discovery and performance of contemporary American works. His debut album "Before She Became Fire" (BCM&D Records) features previously unrecorded cycles by Judith Cloud, Melissa Dunphy, and Lori Laitman, with a second album scheduled for 2026. Through CSI's tenth-anniversary season (2025-2026), he pioneered a live-broadcast partnership with Cincinnati Public Radio (90.9 WGUC), creating hybrid studio-audience experiences that redefine classical music engagement.
As an educator, Martin teaches specialized performance seminars and song literature courses at Hartt while maintaining active guest artist residencies at institutions including the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, and Ithaca College. His fellowship at the Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar under Stephanie Blythe and Alan Louis Smith further solidified his expertise in contemporary vocal repertoire development.
