Samuel K Campos, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Immunobiology at The University of Arizona. He joined the University of Arizona in 2008 as an assistant research professor in the BIO5 Institute and has been part of the Department of Immunobiology since 2011, earning tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in Spring 2017. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and persistence, which are critical to understanding viral-host interactions and identifying potential therapeutic targets for HPV-associated cancers.
- Education: PhD from Rice University (2005), Postdoctoral training at the University of New Mexico (2005-2008)

His research explores the molecular mechanisms by which high-risk HPVs establish persistent infections in host epithelium, contributing to 5% of global cancers. Key areas include viral genome trafficking, immune evasion strategies, and the role of cellular pathways in infection progression.
Recent publications analyze HPV's exploitation of mitotic processes for nuclear entry, vesicular trafficking mechanisms, and L2 protein functional domains critical for infection. These studies intersect virology, molecular biology, and cell biology, revealing potential therapeutic targets for preventing HPV persistence and associated cancers.
As a Cancer Center Member, Dr. Campos contributes to interdisciplinary research initiatives while maintaining active supervision of laboratory activities through his Lab Link.
