Dr Sammia Poveda is a Lecturer in International Development at the University of Sheffield's Department of Geography, within the School of Geography and Planning. Her work focuses on the intersection of mental health, identity, and agency within development contexts, employing frameworks like critical theory, critical pedagogy, and the capabilities approach. She investigates digital technologies' role in empowerment, particularly for marginalized groups such as survivors of modern slavery and women in post-conflict societies. Current projects include ICT-supported reintegration programs in the Philippines and Myanmar, and participatory video methodologies for survivor empowerment.
Her research spans Brazil, Myanmar, and the Philippines, collaborating with NGOs, governments, and multilateral organizations. Notable affiliations include the Sheffield Institute for International Development (SIID), the United Nations University (UNU-CS), and the Human Development and Capability Association (HDCA). Poveda holds a PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London, and has contributed to policy discussions on ICT4D, open development, and responsible AI education.
Teaching emphasizes international development and research methods, with supervision focusing on ICT for human development, psychosocial wellbeing, and intersectional analyses of gender, class, and race.
