Samman Shahpar, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. She maintains clinical affiliations with Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, and participates in the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS).
Her education includes an MD from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (2008), Internal Medicine residency at Christiana Hospital (2009), and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at Northwestern University's McGaw Medical Center (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) (2012). She holds board certification in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation from the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Shahpar's research centers on cancer rehabilitation, with emphasis on functional outcomes after novel cancer therapies, risk factors in breast cancer survivors, and opioid management protocols. Her work bridges oncology and rehabilitation science to optimize survivorship care through evidence-based practices and standardized accreditation frameworks.
Recent publications reveal growing specialization in CAR-T cell therapy rehabilitation outcomes and the development of position statements for opioid prescribing in rehabilitation settings, reflecting evolving standards in cancer rehabilitation medicine.
She has received dual Recognition of Exemplary Role Modeling in the Learning Environment awards from Feinberg's Department of Medical Education (2019, 2024).
Dr. Shahpar actively shapes cancer rehabilitation standards through leadership roles including current Program Planning Committee membership (2024-present), former Chair of the Cancer Rehabilitation Medicine Community (AAPM&R, 2021-2023), and past Vice President of the Cancer Rehabilitation Physician Consortium (2019-2021). She serves on Recovery on Water's Board of Directors and maintains memberships in the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
