Sami Schalk is a Professor in the Department of Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her work bridges black feminist theory and disability studies, focusing on disability, race, and gender in literature and culture. She is author of two open-access books: Bodyminds Reimagined (2018) and Black Disability Politics (2022). Her research explores Black disability activism, speculative fiction, and intersectional frameworks.
Schalk’s research spans academic and public spheres: she has served as Senior Research Fellow at New Disabled South and the Black Disability Institute, and her art has been exhibited at venues like the Ford Foundation Gallery. Current projects include studying pleasure spaces for marginalized communities. She teaches courses on feminist disability studies, intersectionality, and literature.
Her interdisciplinary work critiques inspiration porn, disability erasure in media, and systemic ableism within racialized contexts. Schalk’s publications analyze texts like Octavia Butler’s speculative fiction and Nella Larsen’s Passing, while advocating for antiracist, feminist disability justice.
