Professor Samer Hamdar is a faculty member in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at George Washington University (GW), where he leads the Center for Intelligent Systems Research. His research focuses on vehicular and pedestrian traffic dynamics, disaster management, and sustainable multi-modal transportation networks. He holds a B.E. from the American University of Beirut (2003), an M.S. from the University of Maryland College Park (2004), and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University (2009).
- Education:
- B.E., American University of Beirut, Lebanon, 2003
- M.S., University of Maryland College Park, 2004
- Ph.D., Northwestern University, 2009
Research Interests: His work spans three core areas: (1) traffic dynamics using advanced data sources (e.g., driving simulators, instrumented vehicles), (2) disaster evacuation strategies leveraging social network analysis, and (3) sustainable transportation networks prioritizing non-motorized modes. His research is partially funded by the National Science Foundation's Civil Infrastructure Systems Program.
Recent Trends in Articles: Recent publications emphasize automated vehicle behavior analysis, probabilistic infrastructure safety, and pandemic impacts on transportation systems. His work bridges microeconomic principles with pedestrian modeling and explores AI-driven traffic control challenges.
Grants & Funding: His research is supported by NSF grants focused on collision prediction and infrastructure resilience. He leads interdisciplinary projects integrating data science, simulation, and policy analysis.
Labs & Teams: Directs the Center for Intelligent Systems Research, fostering collaborations on smart transportation systems, disaster response, and sustainable urban mobility.
