Samer Anabtawi is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Comparative Politics at the University College London (UCL), based in the Department of Political Science and School of Public Policy. His roles include overseeing the affiliate study abroad programme in the department. He holds a PhD in comparative politics and quantitative methodology from George Washington University (GWU), alongside MAs from the University of Chicago and GWU, and a BSc from Illinois College.
His research focuses on authoritarianism, contentious politics, domestic/transnational LGBTIQ+ movements, law and society, and Palestinian politics. Key projects include a co-authored book manuscript on institutional autonomy under authoritarianism and a forthcoming book on LGBTIQ+ movements in the Arab region, employing survey experiments, fieldwork, and online ethnography.
His teaching includes undergraduate modules on 'Democracy and Authoritarianism,' 'LGBTIQ Politics,' and a postgraduate course on qualitative methods. He previously taught comparative politics and Middle East politics at GWU. His scholarship engages with transnational LGBTQ+ rights dynamics and legal contestation in authoritarian contexts.
