Dr. Samar Zahrawi is an Assistant Professor of Arabic Language and Culture and Coordinator of the Arabic Program at Sam Houston State University (SHSU). She teaches elementary and intermediate Arabic courses, as well as a Honors College seminar on 'Islamophobia.' Her research focuses on Arabic drama, film, Middle Eastern cultural studies, translation strategies preserving cultural identity, and Arabic pedagogy. She actively participates in academic committees at WOLC, CHSS, and SHSU, organizing conferences and cultural events. Dr. Zahrawi earned her Ph.D. from the University of Leeds in 1992 and previously taught at Syrian and Saudi universities before joining SHSU in 2013.
Her educational background includes a doctorate in English literature and translation studies. She advises the Arabic Language and Culture Club and serves on the editorial board of the Arab World English Journal. Her scholarly contributions emphasize Syrian dramatist Sadallah Wannous, with publications analyzing gender representation, censorship evasion in Syrian drama, and anti-hero figures in modern Arabic plays.
