Samar Al-Bulushi is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Irvine, specializing in geopolitics, imperialism, and militarism with a focus on East Africa. She holds a PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology from Yale University, preceded by degrees from Columbia University.
Research: Her work examines Kenya’s role in U.S.-led counterterrorism operations, arguing that African states increasingly assert their own agendas within imperial frameworks. Her book *War-Making as World-Making* (2024) highlights Kenya’s militarization post-2011 Somali invasion. Current projects explore non-alignment movements in post-Ukraine conflict contexts.
Affiliations: Non-resident fellow at the Quincy Institute, former UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow (2017–2019), and contributor to *Africa is a Country*. Active in human rights advocacy, she previously worked with organizations like the Center for Economic and Social Rights.
