Saman Alavi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Ottawa. His research focuses on theoretical and computational chemistry, with an emphasis on molecular simulations of clathrate hydrates. His work explores applications in energy storage, carbon capture, and planetary science. He co-authored two books: Molecular Simulations: Fundamentals and Practice (2020) and Clathrate Hydrates: Molecular Science and Characterization (2022). He teaches graduate courses like CHM8309 Introduction to Statistical Mechanics.
His research interests include guest-host interactions in clathrate hydrates, molecular dynamics simulations, and the design of materials for energy applications. He collaborates with institutions like the National Research Council of Canada and has published widely in journals such as Journal of Physical Chemistry and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Alavi’s work addresses challenges in clathrate hydrate nucleation, decomposition, and thermal energy storage. He explores the role of additives like ammonium fluoride and methanol in enhancing hydrate stability and functionality.
