Sam Newington is a Senior Lecturer in Divinity at the University of Aberdeen, where he has served for 15 years. His academic journey includes an MA in Classics from King's College, University of London, and a PhD in Theology from Durham University (2006), focusing on creation myths in ancient Greece and the Near East. He holds administrative roles such as Programme Co-ordinator for Christian and Religious Studies, Undergraduate Programme Co-ordinator, and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer for the School of Divinity, History, Philosophy & Art History (DHPA).
His research spans Greek and Roman religion, Near Eastern Studies, and cross-cultural influences, with recent projects including co-editing Body and Soul (2024) and a forthcoming volume on Medusa. He collaborates on initiatives like the Ancient Voices summer workshop and has presented at conferences on topics like queer studies in antiquity and disability in ancient Greece.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate modules on ancient languages (Greek/Latin), death rituals, and mythological studies, as well as postgraduate supervision in Divinity, Religious Studies, and Archaeology.
