Professor Sam El-Osta is a leading figure in medical epigenetics and diabetes research, currently affiliated with Monash University as a Professor and former Program Head of Human Epigenetics. He is internationally recognized for his work on epigenetic mechanisms in type 1 diabetes complications and cardiovascular diseases, with over 200 publications in top-tier journals. As an NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow, he supervises national and international students and leads training programs in epigenetics technologies.
His research focuses on bridging clinical gaps in human epigenetic data, identifying gene targets for drug discovery, and advancing precision medicine. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and an Honorary Associate at the University College Copenhagen. His work has significantly enhanced Australia's reputation in medical epigenetics.
Highlights of his recent publications include studies on DNA methylation in diabetic nephropathy, EZH2 inhibition in pancreatic progenitor cells, and epigenetic therapies for cardiovascular and autoimmune disorders. His editorial roles and leadership in scientific committees further underscore his impact on the field.
