Sally MacIntyre is a Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). She holds an affiliation with the Earth Research Institute (ERI) and has been active in limnological research since joining UCSB's faculty in 2004. Her work focuses on physical processes in aquatic systems and their ecological consequences, particularly in Arctic/Subarctic lakes, tropical regions, and California's coastal waters.
Education:
- B.A. and Ph.D. in Zoology with a minor in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University
- National Needs Postdoctoral Fellowship at UCSB (1981)
- Professional Researcher at UCSB (1982–2004)
Research interests span limnology, biogeochemistry, and climate change impacts. Key foci include turbulence dynamics in lake stratification, gas transfer coefficients for CO₂ and CH₄, and the interplay between hydrology and carbon cycling in Arctic, boreal, and tropical ecosystems. Her fieldwork spans Alaska, Antarctica, East Africa, the Amazon Basin, and California's Mono Lake.
Publications emphasize physical-biological coupling in lakes and rivers, including turbulence modeling, greenhouse gas fluxes, and climate-driven regime shifts. Recent work addresses Arctic lake winter hydrodynamics and the scalability of limnological processes across landscapes.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates extensively with international field teams and interdisciplinary groups modeling freshwater systems. No specific laboratory name is mentioned in texts, but her research involves field stations in polar and tropical regions.
