Sally Hickson is an Associate Professor of Art History in the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph. Her office is located in MacKinnon 273 and she can be reached at shickson@uoguelph.ca or by phone at 519-824-4120 extension. She has taught field courses in Venice, Florence, Rome, Los Angeles, and other international locations. Previously, she served as Director of the School of Fine Art & Music (2014-2019) and as President of the Universities Art Association of Canada (2010-2013).
Her research centers on women and friendship networks in Renaissance visual and material culture, women patrons and patronage studies, the history of collections, and constructions of gender and identity in early modern visual culture. She has expanded her work to examine visual and literary expressions of friendship cultures among early 20th-century Canadian women artists across Canada, Paris, and New York.
Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on gender dynamics in art history, spanning Renaissance patronage systems to modern Canadian artistic communities. Key themes include spatial analysis of monastic environments, deceptive visual techniques in Renaissance art, and transnational networks of women artists.
Dr. Hickson has received significant recognition:
- H.P. Krauss Fellowship at Yale University (2009)
- Natalie Zemon Davis Award (2010)
- College of Arts Teaching Excellence Award (2013-2014)
- UAAC/AAUC Recognition Award (2018)
She actively contributes to academic leadership and public scholarship, currently serving on the Lucy Maud Montgomery House Museum development research team. Her teaching excellence is evidenced by international field courses and sustained departmental service.
Dr. Hickson maintains active research collaborations through the Lucy Maud Montgomery House Museum project, bridging academic scholarship with cultural heritage preservation.
