Sally Church is an active academic researcher at the University of Cambridge, holding positions as Affiliated Researcher in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Research Associate in the Centre of Development Studies, and Research Associate in the Needham Research Institute. She serves as Director of Studies for Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at three Cambridge colleges: Wolfson College, St Edmund's College, and Hughes Hall. Additionally, she directs the educational charity 'Civilizations in Contact' (Reg. No. 1148995).
Her academic background includes:

- PhD at Harvard University (Chinese Literature, specializing in Ming and Qing Fiction and Drama)
Church's research focuses on pre-modern Chinese history, particularly Ming dynasty maritime and overland Silk Road networks. She examines Zheng He's 15th-century expeditions, Chen Cheng's diplomatic missions, and historical texts like Faxian's travels (399-414 CE) and the Longjiang Shipyard Treatise (16th century). Current projects include translating primary sources and collaborating with Chinese institutions on Yellow River Civilization studies and Pax Mongolica travel literature.
She has supervised students in Literary Chinese for multiple years and currently mentors through her Director of Studies roles. Her research is supported by Chinese government-funded collaborations at Henan University's Yellow River Civilization Research Centre and Zhejiang Normal University, along with editorial work for Brill Publishers on Silk Road scholarship.
