Dr Saldiam Barillas serves as Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science within the School of Sport, Nutrition and Allied Health Professions at Oxford Brookes University. His academic role encompasses teaching across multiple undergraduate programs including Sport and Exercise Science, Sport Coaching and Physical Education, and Sport Physical Activity and Health Promotion.
Dr Barillas specializes in Strength and Conditioning with expertise spanning athletic and non-athletic populations across age groups. His research program focuses on four interconnected pillars: long-term athletic development (LTAD) for youth athletes, biomechanical responses to verbal cues during athletic performance, periodized training methodologies, and applications of weightlifting derivatives. Within LTAD, his work particularly addresses maximizing physical performance while minimizing injury risk for young athletes of varying maturity statuses and competitive levels.
His publication record demonstrates consistent output in high-impact sports science journals, with recent work emphasizing kinetic responses to external cues in adolescent soccer players and practical applications for youth athlete development. The research trajectory shows increasing specialization in biomechanical analysis of cueing strategies and periodization models applicable to both athletic performance enhancement and general population health.
Dr Barillas actively contributes to the Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity Research Group (SEPARG) within the Centre for Movement, Occupational and Rehabilitation Sciences (MOReS), where his work intersects with broader themes of physical activity and health promotion. His teaching portfolio includes key modules such as Physiology for Human Movement, Fitness Assessment, Principles of Training, and Research Methods, demonstrating integration of his research expertise into curriculum development.
