Dr. Sakari Vanharanta is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Developmental Biology at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Medicine, with a secondary appointment as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Physiology. His research focuses on translational cancer medicine, particularly mechanisms of cancer evolution, immune evasion, and molecular pathways in renal carcinoma.
Research interests span:
- Cancer biology and tumor evolution
- Biochemistry of carcinogenesis
- Genetic and epigenetic regulation in cancer
- Renal carcinoma mechanisms
- Immune microenvironment interactions
Recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on cancer immunology, transcriptional regulation, and SWI/SNF complex functionality in maintaining cellular lineage fidelity. His work frequently appears in high-impact journals including Nature, Cancer Discovery, and Annual Review of Cancer Biology.
Currently leads multiple funded projects:
- EU MSCA Doctoral Network (€500k, 2025-2029)
- Cancer Foundation Finland grant (€450k, 2024-2026)
- Sigrid Jusélius Foundation research grant (2023-2028)
