Safura Abdool Karim is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University's Berman Institute. She holds a PhD in Law from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and has expertise in public health law, health and human rights, and pandemic response strategies. Her work focuses on leveraging legal frameworks to address obesity, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and vaccine equity, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Education: LLB (2013, University of Cape Town), LLM in Global Health Law (2017, Georgetown University), PhD in Law (2023, University of KwaZulu-Natal). Professional experience includes legal clerkships at the South African Constitutional Court, research roles at the University of Western Cape and Wits School of Public Health, and advocacy in litigation related to health policies and human rights.

Professional Roles: Member of the Africa Health and Human Rights Network steering committee, Global Health Law Consortium, and South African Young Academy of Sciences. Advisory roles include the WHO Global Report on Commercial Determinants of Health and Africa CDC’s Vaccine Delivery Alliance.
Publications: Over 40 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals like Nature Food, the Lancet, and International Journal of Human Rights. Teaching focuses on human rights and infectious disease responses.
