Prof. Dr. Sabine Attinger is a Professor of Mathematical Hydrology at the University of Potsdam, holding the Chair of Mathematical Hydrology within the Institute of Environmental Science and Geography. She maintains a dual affiliation at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig as part of the Department of Computational Hydrosystems. As a Principal Investigator in the DFG Research Group FOR 2694 "Cosmic Sense", she leads critical research modules focused on environmental sensing technologies.
Her research integrates advanced mathematical frameworks with hydrological systems analysis, specializing in spatial-temporal dynamics of soil-water processes. Key focus areas include root zone hydrology (RZ module), sensor network optimization (Smart Coverage/SC module), and computational modeling of environmental fluxes. This work addresses fundamental challenges in understanding water-energy-carbon cycles within the critical zone through innovative cosmic-ray neutron sensing applications.
Prof. Attinger's methodological expertise spans geostatistical inversion techniques, multi-scale modeling of heterogeneous media, and integration of remote sensing with in-situ measurements. Her research directly contributes to sustainable water resource management under climate change scenarios, with implications for precision agriculture and ecosystem resilience. The DFG-funded Cosmic Sense project represents her primary current research vehicle, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across hydrology, geophysics, and environmental engineering.
