Sabina Magliocco is a Lecturer in Sociocultural Anthropology and Chair of the Program in the Study of Religion at the University of British Columbia's Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Arts. She holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University (1988) and has taught at institutions including California State University and the University of California system. Her research focuses on folklore, ritual, modern Pagan religions, magic, and animal studies, with a geographic emphasis on Europe and North America. She has been recognized with prestigious awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship and Honorary Fellowship from the American Folklore Society.
Her work bridges ethnography and critical theory, examining topics such as witchcraft's political dimensions, fairy narratives in contemporary spirituality, and vernacular ontologies surrounding animals. Magliocco's publications include groundbreaking titles like Witching Culture: Folklore and Neo-Paganism in America and Neo-Pagan Sacred Art and Altars: Making Things Whole. She has also produced anthropological films, including the Oss Tales series.
