Dr. Sung-Yong Park is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU), part of the College of Engineering. His research focuses on optoelectrowetting, microfluidics, and lab-on-a-smartphone technologies for environmental and biomedical applications. He leads the Optoelectronics and Bioengineering Systems (OBEs) Lab at SDSU, developing low-cost, portable diagnostic tools and sustainable energy solutions.
Key research interests include light-driven droplet manipulation, plasmonic-enhanced optoelectronics, and integration of microfluidic systems with smartphones for point-of-care diagnostics. His work addresses challenges in water quality monitoring, urinary tract infection screening, and solar energy harvesting. Dr. Park's innovations span from fundamental optofluidic studies to applied engineering solutions.
Recent projects highlight advancements in optoelectrowetting (OEW) platforms, tunable liquid prisms for solar energy systems, and smartphone-integrated biosensors. His publications emphasize interdisciplinary applications at the intersection of mechanical engineering, photonics, and environmental science.
