Professor SIRMA GEYİK is a distinguished faculty member at Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine and Department of Neurology. She has been serving as a Professor since 2023, following her progression from Associate Professor (2018) and Assistant Professor (2013) at the same institution. Dr. Geyik completed her medical education at Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine (1995-2001) and specialized in Neurology at Gaziantep University (2002-2006).
Her educational background includes:
- Medical Specialization in Neurology (2002-2006) at Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Department of Neurology
- Medical Degree (1995-2001) from Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine
Dr. Geyik's research primarily focuses on neurology with special emphasis on headache disorders, particularly migraine pathophysiology and treatment. Her work spans multiple areas including neurogenetics, oxidative stress mechanisms in neurological disorders, neuroimaging, and clinical neurology. She has conducted extensive research on the genetic and molecular aspects of migraine, including studies on CHRNA7 gene variations, WNT signaling pathway, and oxidative DNA damage. Her scholarly contributions also extend to multiple sclerosis, stroke, peripheral neuropathies, and neurosurgical conditions.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend toward molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying headache disorders, with particular interest in how gene expression, methylation status, and copy number variations contribute to migraine pathogenesis. She has also maintained significant clinical research in neurosurgical conditions, multiple sclerosis, and peripheral nerve disorders.
Her scientific achievements include:
- 2016 Study Award for "Migren Hastalığının Patofizyolojisinde Apelin ve Apelin Reseptörünün Olası Rolü" at XVI. Clinical Biochemistry Congress
- 2013 Presentation Award at The 7th World Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy)
Dr. Geyik has supervised multiple graduate students, including FERHAT KILIÇASLAN (thesis on tension-type headache methylation analysis), MEHMET FATİH ÖZALTUN (thesis on CHRNA7 gene variations in migraine), ERMAN ALTUNIŞIK (thesis on oxidative metabolism in migraine), and FİKRET BAKLA (thesis on digital subtraction angiography). She has been involved in several research projects, including studies on vitamin D and homocysteine levels in stroke patients, migraine pathophysiology related to urotensin, and oxidative stress in ischemic stroke.
Dr. Geyik is actively involved in clinical work and teaching at Gaziantep University, where she has taught numerous courses on neurological sciences, headache disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, muscle diseases, epilepsy, and neurological examination techniques. She is a member of both the Headache and Pain Studies Association (since 2016) and the Turkish Neurological Association (since 2012).
