SERGIO FERNANDEZ GARRIDO

Sergio Fernández Garrido is a Professor at the Materials Science Department of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), affiliated with the Instituto Universitario de Sistemas Optoelectrónicos y Microtecnología (ISOM). He holds a permanent position as Profesor Contratado Doctor and leads research in semiconductor materials for photovoltaics and quantum technologies.

His research focuses on group-III nitride semiconductors, nanowire engineering, and advanced photovoltaic materials. Key areas include solid-state lighting, high-power electronics, spintronics, and III-V tandem solar cells on silicon substrates. He develops thin films and nanowires for third-generation solar cells and quantum information systems, leveraging hybrid inorganic/organic semiconductor interfaces.

His scientific awards include an ERC Consolidator Grant (2022), European Academic Distinction for his PhD, and ANECA accreditation as Profesor Contratado Doctor. With over 90 research articles (>3,300 citations), he holds two European patents and has participated in 20 R&D projects including 4 EU initiatives.

Fernández Garrido has supervised 1 PhD thesis, 5 Master's theses, and 2 Bachelor's theses while securing major grants totaling over 3.5 million euros. He leads the Semiconductor Devices Group at ISOM and coordinates the Materials Engineering Degree Innovation Group. His laboratory specializes in molecular beam epitaxy for semiconductor synthesis and characterization of optoelectronic properties.
