Sarah Fiol López is a Professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela, affiliated with the Department of Physical Chemistry within the Faculty of Chemistry. Her primary research focuses on environmental chemistry, particularly soil and water remediation, with expertise in organo-mineral interactions, heavy metal pollution mitigation, and compost characterization. She leads the Ambiosol research group and collaborates with the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Environmental Technologies (CRETUS).
Her doctoral studies at the University of A Coruña (1994) explored acid-base balances in synthetic seawater using Pitzer’s equations, supervised by Dr. Manuel Sastre de Vicente. This foundational work in solution chemistry informs her current research on pollutant behavior in complex environmental systems.
Research interests include:
- Adsorption mechanisms of heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, copper) in soils and water
- Environmental applications of compost and biochar
- Iron oxide dynamics in remediation of mining-contaminated systems
- Phosphate and organic matter interactions in soil stabilization
Publications highlight advancements in:
- Compost quality indices for toxicity assessment
- Iron oxide surfaces as arsenic sinks
- Organic matter’s role in soil aggregate formation
- Bioremediation potential of mosses
Her work bridges laboratory studies and field applications, addressing global challenges in soil/water contamination and sustainable waste management. Collaboration with CRETUS amplifies interdisciplinary impact.
