S. Viswanathan is the F.M. Kirby Distinguished Professor of Investment Banking at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, with a joint appointment in the Department of Economics at Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Finance from Northwestern University (1987), a Master of Management Studies from the University of Bombay, and a Bachelor of Science (First Class with Distinction) from the University of Bombay.
His research focuses on financial economics, particularly:
- Risk management in financial institutions
- Corporate finance and capital structure
- Market microstructure and liquidity dynamics
- Financial intermediation theory
- Mergers, acquisitions, and auction mechanisms
