S. Pearl Brilmyer serves as Assistant Professor of English within the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences, teaching courses on nineteenth-century European literature, sexuality, philosophy, and science.
Her research critically examines Victorian realism through interdisciplinary lenses, notably in her book project The Science of Character: Matter, Form, and the Ends of Victorian Realism, which investigates intersections of scientific thought and literary form. She actively engages with 19th-century German philosophy (particularly theories of will and drive), feminist and queer temporalities, critical race studies, and evolving materialist frameworks. Her publications in PMLA, Representations, and Victorian Studies reflect sustained scholarly contributions to literary theory, while her co-edited GLQ special issue on 'The Ontology of the Couple' underscores commitments to queer theoretical innovation.
