S. Alex Ruthmann is Professor and Area Head of Interactive Media and Business at the NYU Shanghai Program on Creativity and Innovation, with secondary appointments as associated professor in NYU Steinhardt's Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions and affiliate faculty in the Department of Administration, Leadership, and Technology. He serves as Co-Editor of the International Journal of Music Education for the International Society for Music Education (ISME).
His research spans Music Education, Music Technology, and Interactive Media Design, focusing on co-designing technologies for music-making, learning, and community engagement. Key areas include Arts Entrepreneurship and AI applications in creative learning contexts, emphasizing partnerships with youth, schools, and global industry collaborators.
Ruthmann leads the NYU Music Experience Design Lab and directs the Sustainable Entrepreneurship in the Performing Arts NEA Research Lab funded by the US National Endowment for the Arts. His notable projects include Play With Your Music (developed with MIT Media Lab, Peter Gabriel, and P2PU) and the Math Science Music Initiative (with Herbie Hancock and the US Department of Education).
