Professor Roy's research centers on Frankia bacteria and actinorhizal symbiosis, with primary focus on survival strategies of Frankia in natural and human-impacted environments. His lab—the only dedicated Frankia research facility in Canada—studies how these filamentous soil bacteria form nitrogen-fixing root nodules on actinorhizal plants (particularly alders), enabling colonization of nutrient-poor soils. This work bridges fundamental microbial ecology with applied phytotechnology development, emphasizing sustainable environmental restoration techniques.
His research addresses critical challenges in Frankia cultivation, including isolation from environmental matrices and laboratory growth difficulties. Long-term goals involve advancing Frankia ecology understanding and enhancing microorganism accessibility for industrial applications, with projects integrating sustainable development principles into nitrogen cycle management and ecosystem rehabilitation.
