He serves as a mentor at the Graduate School of the Cluster of Excellence "Religion and Politics in the Cultures of Premodernity and Modernity" and is a member of the Board of the Graduate School. His academic career spans over three decades with significant contributions to the fields of biblical archaeology, religious history, and the study of ancient rituals.
Professor Schmitt's educational background includes:
- Habilitation in Old Testament Studies at the University of Münster (2004)

His primary research interests focus on the archaeology and religious history of ancient Israel, with particular expertise in magic, divination, and ritual practices in the Old Testament. Professor Schmitt has made significant contributions to understanding household religion in ancient Israel and the Levant, examining how religious practices were integrated into daily domestic life through material evidence. His work on West Semitic epigraphy and theophoric personal names provides valuable insights into cultural and religious connections across the ancient Near East. He has also extensively studied the reception history of war texts in the Old Testament, exploring how these texts have been interpreted throughout history, including Thomas Müntzer's interpretation of the Book of Daniel.
Professor Schmitt's extensive publication record demonstrates his leadership in examining the intersection of material culture and religious practice in ancient Israel. His recent work shows a growing interest in the embodiment of religious practices, pandemic theology in ancient contexts, and the material evidence of mourning and grief rituals. His scholarship consistently bridges textual analysis with archaeological evidence, providing a more comprehensive understanding of ancient religious life.
Among his notable recognitions:
- Harris Distinguished Visiting Professorship at Dartmouth College (2010)
Professor Schmitt has mentored numerous doctoral students including Julia Arnkens, Jonas Derichs, Katharina Fockenbrock, Anna-Sophie Haake, Franziska Kleybolte, Verena Mildner, Florian Neitmann, and Hildegard Poeschel. His leadership extends to directing research projects B3-3 "Conflict and Ritual in the Old Testament and its Environment" and D2-9 "The Reception of the Book of Daniel by Thomas Müntzer" (until 2018). He has served as Treasurer of the European Association for Biblical Studies (2004-2012) and is actively involved with several scholarly organizations including the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Schools of Oriental Research.
As a principal investigator in the Cluster of Excellence, Professor Schmitt contributes to the Theory Platform "Conflict Research Cloud" focusing on "Religious Mobilization and De-Institutionalization." His current research continues to explore the complex relationship between religious diversity and legal-political unity in ancient contexts, with implications for understanding contemporary religious dynamics.
