Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Quay is the acting managing director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) since January 1, 2022. He is a professor specializing in energy-efficient high-frequency electronics and leads one of Germany’s key research institutes in semiconductor development. His leadership focuses on modernizing research topics and organizational structures, with strong emphasis on sustainability, quantum technologies, and digital transformation within applied physics and engineering.
His research interests center on energy-efficient electronics, which he views as pivotal for climate neutrality and digitalization. He advocates for innovative approaches in semiconductor manufacturing, including simulation, software development, and sustainable cleanroom operations. His vision includes reducing energy consumption in digital systems and advancing European independence in chip production through initiatives like the European Chips Act.
Prof. Quay emphasizes a cultural shift in research—fostering creativity, challenging established norms, and enabling flexible, interdisciplinary work. He believes in the potential of new materials and quantum computing to revolutionize energy efficiency.
