Róisín Burke is an Assistant Professor of Public International Law at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) within Utrecht University's Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance. She teaches in bachelor's and master's programs on Public International Law, Atrocity Crimes, Transitional Justice, and Women, Peace and Security (WPS). Her research focuses on international criminal law, humanitarian law, gender justice, and peace operations, with emphasis on accountability frameworks for peacekeepers and water diplomacy in conflict zones.
Education: LLB in Law and European Studies (University of Limerick), LLM in International Human Rights Law (National University of Ireland, Galway), PhD from University of Melbourne (2012). Admitted as an Attorney in New York State.
Research Projects: Leading an NWO-funded project on WPS, transboundary water, and environmental peacebuilding in the South Caucasus. Established the Women in Water Diplomacy Network in collaboration with regional partners. Published widely on UN/AU peacekeeping accountability, sexual exploitation by forces, and rule of law in conflict-affected states.
Awards: Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship (2013), multiple research awards for early-career publications (2010-2011).
Professional Roles: Former Senior Law Lecturer at University of Canterbury and Political Advisor to Ireland's UN Mission. Active in organizations like the Environmental Peacebuilding Association. Engaged in policy consultations with NGOs and intergovernmental bodies.
