Ryder Thornton is a Senior Professor of Practice in Theatre at Tulane University’s Department of Theatre & Dance, housed within the School of Liberal Arts. He holds a PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an MFA from Temple University, with additional training from American Conservatory Theatre and SITI Company. His work spans over 50 directed productions across the US and internationally, focusing on devised and site-specific theatre, including acclaimed shows like Two Elizas and Melancholy Play. His research explores philosophy in modern tragedy and ritual theories of drama, culminating in his book Transfiguring Tragedy: Schopenhauer, Stirner, and Nietzsche in Eugene O’Neill’s Early Plays. His articles appear in the Eugene O’Neill Review, and he actively participates in national/international conferences.
Awards: His production of Machinal won the Big Easy Award for Best University Production.
Professional Affiliations: Member of The Stage Directors and Choreographer’s Society, Dramatist Guild, and alumnus of Directors Lab West. He teaches courses in theater studies and performance.
