Ryan Whitford is an Associate Professor at Murdoch University's Centre for Crop and Food Innovation within the Food Futures Institute. He holds a PhD in Agricultural Biotechnology from the University of Adelaide and a Bachelor's in Agricultural Science from the University of Western Australia.
His research focuses on cereal genetics and reproductive biology with emphasis on developing hybrid wheat varieties through genome editing technologies like CRISPR. His work aims to improve crop yields and stress resistance while reducing hybrid seed production costs.
Professor Whitford has led hybrid wheat and genome editing programs at both the University of Adelaide and Australian Centre of Plant Functional Genomics. His current research explores molecular mechanisms of plant stress response and meiosis regulation.
His scientific awards include the Emerging Industry Research Partnership Award, National Farmers Federation Prize, and Eva Sobotka Prize in Agriculture.
