Ryan Kerney is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Gettysburg College's College of Arts and Sciences. His research bridges organismal biology with science policy, focusing on amphibian ecology, evolution, and development while addressing societal impacts of research and environmental policy challenges.
- Education: BA from Hampshire College (1999), PhD from Harvard University (2007)
Research Interests: Kerney's work centers on amphibians—a group critical to ecological balance and vulnerable to global declines. His lab investigates:
- Skeletal development diversity
- Vestigial structure formation
- Symbioses between salamander embryos and green algae
- Limb and lung development
- Descriptive morphology
- Science policy, including R&D impact measurement and environmental/energy policy
This research spans biology subfields like developmental biology, ecology, and evolutionary biology while connecting to broader scientific and societal contexts.
Awards:
- Science and Technology Policy Fellow - AAAS (2012)
