Ryan Harrod is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology & Geography at the University of Alaska. His research focuses on bioarchaeology, paleopathology, and forensic anthropology, with an emphasis on understanding identity, health, conflict, and social inequality through ancient and historic human remains. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2013).
His work examines violence as a social control strategy in marginal environments, health/nutrition patterns among Native American populations, and social inequality in historical immigrant groups. Key projects include analyses of the Four Corners region (U.S. Southwest) and Chinese immigrant communities. He has co-authored/co-edited influential books such as The Bioarchaeology of Climate Change and Violence (2014) and serves on Springer’s Bioarchaeology and Social Theory editorial board.
Research interests span bioarchaeological methodological frameworks, trauma analysis, ethics, and repatriation. Current projects include a monograph based on his dissertation research and ongoing investigations into Alaskan and Great Basin populations.
