Ryan Gunderson is a Professor of Sociology and Gerontology at Miami University, serving as Lead Departmental Advisor for Sociology, Criminology, and Social Justice. His work focuses on environmental sociology, political economy, and critical theory, examining systemic barriers to addressing climate change and environmental degradation. He holds affiliations with the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability.
Education includes a PhD in Sociology from Michigan State University, an MA in Sociology from the University of Wyoming, and a BA in Secondary Education/Social Studies from the same institution.
His research explores climate inaction, technological rationality, and ideological critiques of environmental policies. Key themes include reification, energy democracy, and the political economy of geoengineering. Gunderson has published over 60 articles and multiple books, including Hothouse Utopia (2021) and Making the Familiar Strange (2020).
