Ryan Conrath is an Associate Professor of English at Salisbury University, specializing in film studies and visual cultural theory. He holds a PhD in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester (2016), an MFA in Film Production from Boston University (2009), and a BA in Film Studies from Eckerd College (2006). His research explores experimental cinema, editing politics, and ecocritical frameworks in film. He has served as Associate Editor of Literature/Film Quarterly and previously managed InVisible Culture journal.
His work bridges academic scholarship and creative production, including roles as director, cinematographer, and performer in independent films. He has curated exhibitions on Indigenous cinema, color film history, and postwar montage. His monograph Between Images: Montage and the Problem of Relation (Oxford UP, 2023) analyzes editing's role in constructing social relations. Recent articles engage topics like Cauleen Smith's spatial narratives and ecological dimensions of filmic form.
Conrath's interdisciplinary approach spans film production, archival curation, and collaborative artistic projects. He maintains active roles in academic publishing while continuing experimental filmmaking initiatives.
