Professor Ruth Swanwick is a leading academic in Deaf Education at the University of Leeds, specifically within the School of Education. She holds the position of Professor of Deaf Education and co-directs the Faculty of Social Sciences Research Methods Centre. Her work focuses on early support for deaf children, multilingual communication, and bilingual pedagogies. She leads the MA in Deaf Education/Teacher of the Deaf Programme, the first UK programme integrating sign language and deaf adult perspectives into deaf children’s education, delivered via distance and blended learning.
Her research explores deaf children’s multilingualism, literacy development, and the role of sign language in inclusive education. Notable projects include a British Academy-funded study on deaf children’s multilingualism, an ESRC-funded literacy project, and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (Comm4CHILD) examining language development for hearing-impaired children. She collaborates internationally, including a UK-Ghana project enhancing early education for deaf children in Ghana.
Professor Swanwick’s teaching and supervision involve mentoring postgraduate researchers and advancing teacher development. She actively engages in professional networks such as the British Association of Teachers of the Deaf and advocates for sign bilingualism through initiatives like the Sign Bilingual Consortium.
