Dr. Ruth Harvie is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Nutrition at St Francis Xavier University, with adjunct roles at the University of Waterloo and affiliate scientist positions at Nova Scotia Health and Maritime SPOR Support Unit. She completed her PhD at the University of Otago (New Zealand), focusing on diet-microbiota interactions in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), following a decade of clinical dietetics experience.
Her research centers on two themes: gastrointestinal nutrition (implementing evidence-based dietary interventions for IBS/celiac disease via virtual platforms) and long-term care nutrition (addressing malnutrition through texture-modified foods and relationship-centered mealtime practices). She employs implementation science to bridge research and clinical practice.
Dr. Harvie leads funded projects including:
- Integration of dietary education into electronic IBS pathways (Research Nova Scotia grant)
- Development of virtual celiac disease services (Nova Scotia Health grant)
- Protein-enriched food products for dysphagia patients (industry partnership)
She supervises graduate students on topics like:
- Cost-effective nutrition in long-term care
- Physical activity resources for IBS
- Nutrient analysis of texture-modified diets
