Prof. Dr. Ruth Hall is Acting Director of the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa, holding the South African Research Chair in Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies. She specializes in land reform, agrarian change, and political economy.
Her research examines the politics of land rights and agrofood system transformations in Africa, with focus areas including:
- Political economy of redistributive land reforms
- Land commodification and governance
- Agrarian politics and labor relations
- Changing agro-food systems
Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on land governance, agrarian transformation, and political economy in African contexts, particularly examining power dynamics in resource allocation and policy impacts on rural communities.
