Dr. Ruth Gibson is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow jointly appointed in Stanford's Department of Health Policy (School of Medicine) and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. Her Banting Fellowship supports research on maternal-child health in conflict-affected regions.
She investigates health system impacts of geopolitical coercion including sanctions and warfare, with regional focus on Sub-Saharan Africa (Sahel) and Asia (China-Taiwan relations). Collaborations include UN Human Rights Council sanction monitoring and International Criminal Court war crime assessments. Methodologically employs burden of disease modeling, policy analysis, and field-based needs assessment.
Multilingual capabilities include English, Mandarin Chinese, and French. Prior humanitarian work includes directing medical relief in post-coup Madagascar and health system development in Yemen/Somalia. Holds PhD in Global Health and Strategic Studies from University of British Columbia.
