Rustem F. Ismagilov is the Ethel Wilson Bowles and Robert Bowles Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he also holds the position of Merkin Institute Professor. He serves as Director of the Jacobs Institute for Molecular Engineering for Medicine since 2013. With dual appointments in Biological Engineering and Medical Engineering, Professor Ismagilov leads an interdisciplinary research group focused on solving global health challenges through innovative technologies.
His educational background includes a B.S. from the Higher Chemical College of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1994) and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1998). Prior to his current Bowles Professorship, he held the Miles Professor position at Caltech from 2011-2013.
Professor Ismagilov's research spans several interconnected domains at the intersection of chemistry, biology, and engineering. His work centers on understanding interactions between microbes and the human host across various contexts—from infection to beneficial colonization. A key focus is developing novel microfluidic technologies that enable high-resolution quantitative measurements of complex biological systems that were previously impossible to analyze. His group has made significant contributions to rapid diagnostics for infectious diseases, including multiple COVID-19 related projects, and to understanding the interplay between food, gut microbes, and biophysics in human health. The lab's approach combines fundamental research to understand complex systems with translational research aimed at real-world impact, maintaining a culture of scientific rigor, creativity, collaboration, and mutual support.
Analysis of Professor Ismagilov's recent publications reveals a strong focus on advancing diagnostic capabilities for infectious diseases, particularly through innovative approaches to sample collection and analysis. His work demonstrates expertise in microfluidics, quantitative analysis of biological systems, and translating fundamental discoveries into practical healthcare applications. A significant portion of his recent research addresses challenges in viral detection, with particular emphasis on improving the sensitivity and timing of diagnostic tests for pathogens like SARS-CoV-2.
Professor Ismagilov has received notable recognition through his named professorships—the Ethel Wilson Bowles and Robert Bowles Professorship and the Merkin Institute Professorship—which reflect his significant contributions to the field. His leadership extends to directing the Jacobs Institute for Molecular Engineering for Medicine, where he fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to address pressing medical challenges.
In terms of academic mentoring, Professor Ismagilov teaches courses including ChE/BE/MedE 112: "Creativity and Technological Innovation with Microfluidic Systems" and ChE 63: "Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics." His teaching philosophy emphasizes combining fundamental scientific principles with practical innovation, particularly encouraging students to develop solutions for global health challenges. His research group includes members with diverse backgrounds in chemistry, biology, medicine, biophysics, and multiple engineering disciplines, creating a rich interdisciplinary environment that collaborates with clinical teams, industry partners, and other researchers to translate discoveries into real-world impact.
The Ismagilov Group operates as a dynamic interdisciplinary team passionate about bringing creativity, science, and technology to solve problems in global health. The lab develops novel technologies for high-resolution quantitative measurements and computational analyses of complex systems like the human-microbe interface. Their work spans both fundamental research to understand these complex systems and translational research to create real-world impact, with a lab culture emphasizing scientific rigor, creativity, collaboration, and mutual support.
