Russell Peck was the John Hall Deane Professor Emeritus of Rhetoric and Poetry and Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Rochester. A renowned scholar of medieval literature, his work focused on Chaucer, Gower, and the TEAMS Middle English Texts Series (METS), which he founded. He served for over five decades, earning accolades like the 2015 Robert L. Kindrick-CARA Award and the University Presidential Medal of Honor (2009).
Peck’s legacy includes the Rossell Hope Robbins Library, a medieval research collection, and the METS series, providing accessible editions of medieval texts. He pioneered immersive educational experiences, such as teaching at his Canadian farm and leading theater programs in England. His teaching excellence was recognized nationally, including through the Danforth Foundation’s E. Harris Harbison Award (1972).
Peck’s contributions extended beyond academia: he championed interdisciplinary learning, organized cultural events, and maintained a vibrant community through initiatives like the English Department’s diploma ceremony. His retirement in 2015 did not slow his scholarly work, as he continued editing METS volumes until shortly before his death.
