Russell J Hand is Professor of Glass Science and Engineering and Director of Education at the University of Sheffield's School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering. He holds an MA and PhD from the University of Cambridge and an MEd from Sheffield. A founder of Sheffield's Immobilisation Science Laboratory (ISL), he specializes in nuclear waste vitrification and mechanical properties of glasses.
Research Focus: His work spans two core areas: 1) Developing vitreous wasteforms for nuclear waste immobilization (focusing on compositional design and chemical durability), and 2) Investigating mechanical behavior of silicate glasses to enhance strength. Key research includes radioactive waste vitrification, chemical durability of nuclear glasses under varied environments, and composition-property relationships in glass systems.
Leadership & Recognition: Fellow and Past-President of the Society of Glass Technology, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and Chartered Physicist. He has supervised over 55 PhD students and held leadership roles including Sub-Dean for Undergraduate Affairs and Head of Interdisciplinary Programmes in Engineering.
Facilities & Collaborations: Contributes to Sheffield's MIDAS facility and HADES (High Activity Decommissioning Engineering & Science). Serves as Secretary to the Coordinating Technical Committee of the International Commission on Glass.
