Russell Ashmore is a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing at the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU). He has extensive experience in higher education, previously teaching at the University of Sheffield since 1994 and at SHU since 2006. His professional qualifications include RMN (Registered Mental Health Nurse) and RNT (Registered Nurse Teacher) from the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
He holds a BSc in Psychology (University of Manchester, 1983), MA in Communication Studies (1989), and PhD from SHU (2012) on the implementation of Section 5(4) of the Mental Health Act 1983. Russell’s research focuses on mental health legislation, patient rights, interpersonal skills in clinical settings, compassion in healthcare, and transgender mental health. He has contributed to 60+ peer-reviewed publications and over 90 conference presentations globally.
His professional engagements include roles in the Department of Health’s Nurse Advisory Group on Mental Health Act reforms, the National Advisory Group for Compassion in Practice, and steering committees for the Network of Psychiatric Nursing Research since 2001. Russell received the Akinsanya Special Commendee award (2013) for doctoral research innovation.
In teaching, he emphasizes mental health legal frameworks, therapeutic communication, and compassion development in healthcare practitioners. He currently supervises postgraduate students researching topics like occupational therapy for frail older adults, alcohol use among Zimbabwean migrants, and psychiatric intensive care experiences. Russell also serves on editorial boards for the British Journal of Nursing and Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, and peer reviews for multiple journals.
